Within the activities of the 10th edition of the Spring of Arabic Poetry Festival, a seminar dedicated to the celebrated Kuwaiti poet Yaqoub Abdullah Al-Rasheed discussed the interest of critics and public in his poetry.
The seminar, held on the first day of the festival, gathered the daughter of the late poet Suad Yaqoub Al-Rasheed who talked about his life, work and family while Dr Turki al-Magheed presented a paper analyzing the poetry of Al-Rasheed. Dr Abdullah Al-mehanna moderated the seminar.
In her testimony about her late father, Suad Al-Rasheed mentioned many details about his daily life at home, his diplomatic way in treating others and the fine morals she and her siblings learnt from him. She spoke also about his poetry and how he spent most of his time between books.
The paper, entitled “The Intertextuality in Yaqoub Al-Rasheed Poetry”, written by Dr Turki al-Magheed, was read by Dr Abdulmajid Falah, analyses how the Al-Rasheed in his poems used several methods of intertextuality. He sometimes took phrases from the holy Quran and rephrased it in his poetry or he recalled personalities from different backgrounds and presented it in several poetic images. Dr Al-Magheed gave an example on how the poet used the mythic Ishtar from the Babylonian civilization in his romantic love poems. The paper tackled also the characters used in Al-Rasheed poems such as the martyr, the betrayer, the informer and others.
The seminar was followed by the second poetry reading evening with the poets: Moudi Rahal from Kuwait, Fawzi Eissa and Rana Al-Azzam from Egypt, Mohamed Amin El-Omr and Safwat Qadissat from Jordan, Hassan Kamal from Bahrain and Mohamed Jameel Ahmed from Sudan, while poet Raja Al-Kahtani ran the evening.
