Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre reviewed the cultural and social biography of poet Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain in a seminar held Sunday evening and moderated by former Kuwaiti Minister of Education Dr Rasheed Al-Hamad and former Secretary General of the GCC, Dr Abdullah Bishara.
In his speech, Al-Babtain expressed his pride of Jaber Cultural Centre as one of the most important cultural monuments in the region, mentioning how keen was late Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in promoting culture in Kuwait and his permanent work and constant quest to make Kuwait a center of culture.
Al-Babtain spoke about his passion for Arabic language in particular and culture in general which drove him to establish first Saud Al-Babtain Kuwaiti Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies in 1974, then the Foundation of Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain’s Prize for Poetic Creativity in 1989, which became later (Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain Cultural Foundation).
For his part, Dr Abdullah Bishara praised the efforts of Al-Babtain and his philanthropy work, his love to his country and his passion for poetry and culture. “Al-Babtain has raised the name of Kuwait high in each forum and continent he reached,” said Dr Bishara.
The audience was given an idea about the biography of Abdulaziz Al-Babtain which is full of local and international achievements as a poet and one of the most prominent businessmen in the country. He has received numerous prestigious awards and 14 honorary doctorates from several Arab and foreign universities.
Abdulaziz Al-Babtain is a talented poet and one of the innovators of his era. He published his first book of verse Bauh Al-Bawadi (Intimations of the Desert) in 1995, with a second collection, Musafir fi Al-Qifar (Wastefarer), in 2004. He was also chosen honorary President of the World Poetry Academy, which is based in the Italian city of Verona, succeeding the world-renowned poet Leopold Senghor (11 June 2011)
He established the Foundation of Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain's Prize for Poetic Creativity in 1989 in Cairo, the Al-Babtain’s Translation Center in 2004 in Beirut, the Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain’s Center for Dialogue among Civilizations in 2005 in Cordoba, the Al-Babtain’s Center for Authenticating Manuscripts in 2007 in Alexandria. He also established a number of chairs for the Arabic language and Islamic culture in several universities in Europe, USA and Asia.
Al-Babtain also built many schools in several countries and provided support to promote culture in all aspects and most of his contributions outside the country bearing the name of Kuwait.
This is the second seminar hosted by Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre since its inauguration last October in the presence of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the launch of the cultural season that aims to host several special guests from different intellectual and literary trends and to raise important cultural issues.
